Skybridge’s origins commenced when Glen Makin, an electrical engineer, identified that the fledgling satellite broadcast industry was being poorly serviced, particularly in high need areas such as regional and remote areas of Australia. Glen’s background as a field engineer enabled him to identify with the needs of both technicians and customers. In 1999, Skybridge opened for business, with a focus on process management, visibility and quality control.

Skybridge grew quickly as clients realised they could focus on their core business, safe in the knowledge that complex logistical and operation issues were being professionally managed for them.

Skybridge soon became the preeminent provider of satellite broadband services in Australia, and has been instrumental in providing broadband to the 2% of Australians who cannot access terrestrial services. By 2007, Skybridge was responsible for rolling out over 90% of broadband satellite installations under the Australian Broadband Guarantee program.

Concurrently, Skybridge became the preferred commercial provider of services to Optus, and also provided services for Foxtel, Woolworths, IBM, NAB, 3M and other corporations with a requirement to provide consistent services to regional branches regardless of geographic location.

In 2010 we were appointed to deliver the Digital Switchover Program on behalf of the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy (A Federal Government initiative). The following year, we were also appointed as the exclusive provider of VSAT installation services on behalf of NBN Co. We have successfully completed over 250,000 installations on behalf of these two programs across metropolitan, regional and highly remote areas of Australia.

Skybridge has been recognized for its innovative approach to business by a number of prestigious awards including being nominated as a finalist for the 2008 and 2012 Telstra Business Awards, a Fastest Growing Private Business finalist in the ANZ Private Business Awards in 2009, and September 2009 saw Skybridge ranked 9th in the BRW Fast 100 Companies. In 2012 we received additional recognition for being one of Australia’s Top 5 most innovative companies.

One of the key drivers of Skybridge’s success has been the introduction of SIMON (Skybridge Information Management Online Network). SIMON is a fully integrated, online installation and maintenance management system streamlines the interaction amongst stakeholders, as well as providing the overarching management control over all activities including job provisioning, logistics, quality assurance and OH&S compliance management.

Utilising the loyal workforce, processes and systems that were developed over 14 years at Skybridge, Skybridge has now diversified into new industries including alternative energy, facilities management and mining services, and we are all set to continue our expansion into the future.
